John's date of birth was recorded in the Evans Family Bible which was in Mair (Clare) Cowley's (#140) possession in 1990.

From the 1861 Wales Census for Lanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire (RG9 Piece 4242 Folio 97 Page 21) John, 3, was with his parents John, 39, and Anne, 32, at 22 Wern, Tirymyneich, Wern, Montgomeryshire. With him were his siblings Jane, 6, and Richard, 3 days, and uncle Richard Evans, 36. Everyone was recorded as having been born in Lanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire.

From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 5605 Folio 44 Page 19) John, 13, a Lead Mine Labourer, was with his parents John, 49, also a Lead Mine Labourer and Anne, 43, at 17 Wern, Tirymyneich, Darowen, Montgomeryshire. With him were his siblings Jane, 16, a Lead Mine Labourer, Richard, 9, a Scholar, and Samuel, 6, also a Scholar.

From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5478 Folio 41 Page 3) there was a John Evans, 23, from Darowen, Montgomeryshire lodging at 12 New Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales with Hugh Lloyd, 73, a Blacksmith, his wife Mary, 71, and daughter Margaret, 32, all from Llanegryn, Merionethshire. If this is the correct John Evans he changed profession to become a Tailor. Also lodging at the same address was a Morgan Davies, 18, a Tailor from Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 46 Page 6) we see that John, 30, a Tailor and Draper from Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire, has married Mary (Williams), 28, and they are living at 11 New Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. Their children, Elizabeth, Annie, John O(wen) and Mary are living with them. They have a 16 year old General Servant by the name of Mary J. Evans from Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire and an Apprentice Tailor, 16 year old Henry R(obert) Shortland from London. Henry went on to marry John's sister-in-law, Susannah Williams.

From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 5190 Folio 32 Page 6) John and Mary are still at 11 New Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. John is still a Tailor and Draper, now aged 41 and Mary, 37, seems to have gone in for producing children as there are another 4 added to the household. Elizabeth, Annie, John O(wen), and Mary have been joined by Olwen J(ane), Enid M(argaret), David S(amuel) and Richard B(reese). Also in the household are 19 year old John E. O. Williams a Servant Tailor from Treddol Cardiganshire and 16 year old Apprentice Tailor James J. Williams also from Treddol, Cardiganshire.

From the 1911 Wales Census for Aberdovey, Merionethshire (RG14PN33713 RG78PN1945 RD615 SD2 ED6 SN114) John, 53, Tailor and Draper from Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire, was with his wife Mary, 48, from Aberdovey, Merionethshire, at Meirion House, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With them were their children Elizabeth, 27, Helping in the trade, Annie, 25, Assistant Mistress, Mary, 20, Milliner, David Samuel, 17, Tailor, Enid Margaret, 14, Mother's Help, Richard Breese, 12, Scholar, and Gwennie, 7, Scholar. All the children were recorded as having been born in Aberdovey, Merionethshire.
