The 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5478 Folio 42 Page 6) gives Mary, as being at home in Dovey Terrace, Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales with her mother Margaret. Also at home are her brother Richard and her sisters Maggie, Annie Jane and Catherine. Her grandmother, Mary Rees, is also present.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 49b Page 12), Mary and her family have moved to 22 Sea View Terrace, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. The head of the household is her widowed mother, Margaret. Her brothers John and Archibald are also present along with her sister Elizabeth. Visitors to the house are Alice L Crowther from Shropshire and Mary E Williams and Ethel W Williams from Oswestry, Salop. Mary and Ethel can be found in the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 2659 Folio 56 Page 3).

From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 5190 Folio 36 Page 13) Mary, 26, was living at Madeira House, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. She was living on her own means at home. With her were her siblings Catherine, 22, also living on her own means, John, 19, an Engineer (Fitter), and Elizabeth, 17. Visiting the household were Owen Hughes, 47, a Grocer Shopkeeper from Llanfyllan Montgomeryshire, his wife Sarah Hughes, 39, and their sons Thomas D Hughes, 4, and John O Hughes, 1.
