From the 1871 Census (RG10 Piece 5602 Folio 27 Page 14) Lewis, 9, was living with his mother Ann, 30, a Seaman's Wife, in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. His father was aboard the schooner Gratitude. With him were his sisters Eliza Anne, 5, and Frances Ellen, 2.

From the 1881 England Census (RG11 Piece 2202 Folio 104) Lewis, 19, Mate from Newport, Monmouthshire, was aboard the Catherine (of Aberystwyth) at anchor in Plymouth, Devonshire, England. Also abourd were Thomas Hughes, Master from Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, and Hugh Jones, 16, Ordinary Seaman from Aberdovey, Merionethshire.

From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4373 Folio 48 Page 38) Lewis, 28, was living with his mother, Ann, 50, a Greengrocer, at 26 George Street, Newport, Monmouth. With him were his siblings Frances E(llen), 22, a Confectioner's Assistant, Evan J(ones), 19, and Susanah M(argaret), 15. Also staying with them was John Eddins, 41, a Railway Engine Driver from Malvern.
