Shared note

The following is from information gathered by Sian Peters as a result of a project she undertook.

Owen Leslie was 28 years old at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was then working in Birmingham for a firm called James Booth and Co. They were concerned in the first stages of making aeroplanes. They made the material from which eventually planes were made. They also made propellors for fighter planes. Although he tried twice to join the Navy his work was classed as essential war work and so he was refused permission to join. He worked for the same firm throughout the war and finally left in 1950 when he moved away from Birmingham. He was also a Lance-Corporal in the Home Guard and one of his duties was to teach new recruits how to use a rifle.
