From the 1881 Census (RG11 Piece 5595 Folio 148 Page 8) there was a John Rees, 15, from Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales Merionethshire, aboard the Schooner Mary Jane as Boy. The vessel was riding at anchor in New Harbour, Holyhead, Anglesey. Also aboard were the Master Captain David Daniel, married, 44, from Borth Cardiganshire and Mate Edward Jones, unmarried, 21, from Rhyl, Flintshire.
From the 1891 Census (RG12 Piece 4587 Folio 38 Page 8), John, 25, was a Merchantship Sailor living at 15 Copper Hill Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. Also in the household are his wife, Margaret(ta), 25, and his 4 month old daughter, Elizabeth.
From the 1901 Census (RG13 Piece 3438 Folio 132 Page 32), John, 35, was a Mariner living at 7 Dalkeith Street, Toxteth, Liverpool. Margaretta, 35, his wife and Elizabeth, his daughter, now 10, have been joined by Margaret, 8, Mary E(thel), 5, William, 4 and Annie, 2.

With him were his siblings Margaret, 11, Scholar, Richard, 9, Scholar, and Rowland, 6. All the children were reportedly born in Towyn, Merionethshire.
From the 1881 Wales Census for Aberdovey, Merionethshire (RG11 Piece 5478 Folio 34 Page 1) John, 16, Farm Labourer, was with his parents David, 56, Farmer of 20 Acres from Pennal, Merionethshire, and Anne, 54, from Towyn, Merionethshire, at Sychnant, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were his siblings Margaret, 21, Housemaid (Domestic), Richard, 18, Farm Labourer, and Rowland, 16, Farm Labourer. All the children were reportedly born in Towyn, Merionethshire.
